The Cardiac Diet Explained

Managing cardiovascular disease (CVD) often involves a combination of pharmacologic therapy and a solid dietary approach known as the “cardiac diet.” It’s critical that the foods we recommend for our patients be as carefully planned as the pharmacologic care they receive because diet is an important part of cardiac health. Although there are often nutrition controversies in scientific journals and among the lay press, there are evidence-based and broadly recognized recommendations that you can consider when caring for patients with CVD, whether inpatient or outpatient. This article reviews the top evidence-based cardiac diet recommendations and discusses interventions for nurses who assess, educate, and care for patients with CVD.
